REDISCOVERING CREANGA & EMINESCU

autor prof limba engleza Rarinca Georgeta

Moldavia is a land oozing with Romanian culture. We spent four days on a trip to this realm of civilization, breathing the same air and walking the same paths as the greatest authors, writers, musicians and leaders of our country.

It was a hands-on experience of Săptamâna Altfel 2018, 22 October- 25 October, the best and the most fruitful days in our students’ education. What better way of teaching our pupils about our national writers than that of visiting the places where Creangă and Eminescu lived?

Day one of our trip:

Our group of students visited Creangă’s place of creation and demise, Bojdeuca. The guide gave us some funny facts about Ion Creangă, which our group was more than happy to absorb.

Creangă, the great story teller wrote all his masterpieces after he had moved to Iași to his little cottage, Bojdeuca, in the eighteen years he spent there, till the day he passed away on New Years’ Eve. He named his beloved cats after his closest friends. His favourite one was a smart tomcat, Titu, (Titu Maiorescu) which had a special gift: he used to stay on the porch of Creangă’s hut. He would jump on the front door, opening it and announcing his master that he was going to have company.

Creangă was also known for his voracious appetite for the yummy meals cooked by his house maid. He would often sit with a little table in his lap and eat like a horse after the guests had left his house.

Day two of our trip:

Eminescu’s Ipotești was trying to play hide-and-seek with our curious students. The house, hidden behind the copper autumn leaves, is the exact replica of our national poet’s place of birth. Three pictures, the only ones taken of Eminescu, are displayed on the whitewashed walls, just above the makeup kit, which Mihai had used while acting. The family church, bought by Eminescu’s mother for 200 golden coins prides itself on the original paintings and on silver font where the poet was baptized.

Two wooden wardrobes were recovered after years and years spent in a dusty warehouse. One of Eminescu’s two sisters had signed in red on the back of these pieces of furniture while moving to Botoșani, which made their origin a sure thing.

Day three of our trip:

We visited Iasi, the capital city of Moldavia, the park where we admired Eminescu’s Linden Tree, a 500-year-old silver lime (Tilia tomentosa Moench) in Copou Park. Mihai Eminescu used to sit beneath this lime writing some of his best works there, turning the tree into one of the most important natural monuments and a Iasi landmark.

It has been an eye-opening experience so if you want to learn more about this wonderful destination, go and explore Moldavia! It is a feast for the eyes and soul that will definitely awaken your senses while feeding your brain.
