Book Review – The Misfits

The Misfits by James Howe is a book centered around „The Gang Of Five”, a group of kids that have been called names all their life. Being a children’s book or even a young adult one, this novel is full of lessons not only for the young readers, but for teenagers and adults also.
Taking place in a small town called Paintbrush Falls, the plot follows four seven graders, Bobby, the narator and the „fat one” of the group, Skeezie, „the 50s hooligan”, Joe, the „gay one”, and Addie, „the smart girl”. All throughout middleschool, they’ve been the outsiders, never fitting in and always being called shameful names such as nerd, loser, sissy, Einstein and the list can go on forever. But as the elections for the student council approach, these four kids form the No-Name Party, meant to represent the minority of the community, the other misfits and put a stop to name calling in school.
The characters will face lots of challenges but will also learn lessons about love, friendship, and what „being yourself” truly is, which is why I recommend this book to everyone who is having problems fitting in.
